'John Lennon' painting wins Art on the Street
The winner of the Best in Show award at the Art on the Street painting contest in downtown Grand Haven on Saturday was Alexandra Perrier.

Her work was titled "Peace Please, John Lennon."
Second place went to Natalie Carmolli. Anna Dexter took third place in the contest, with the public voting for their favorites from Saturday night through late Monday.

The paintings are displayed on the fence surrounding the downtown reconstruction project on Washington Avenue, between Harbor Drive and First Street. Winners received gift baskets.

The contest was sponsored by the Grand Haven Main Street Downtown Development Authority.

All the Beatles spent a lot of time and money on holidays. John is seen here with Yoko in Antibes, shortly before he began recoding what was to be his final album, Double Fantasy. In his last year he talked about travelling to see his Aunt Mimi at the house he bought her in Dorset. He never made it.

The 2007 Lennon Tribute SideBar

Every year since the first anniversary of John Lennon's death, a group of actors, dancers and musicians has gathered to pay tribute to the musical genius's legacy of peace, love, rebellion, feminism, spirituality and personal transformation.

The event has transformed over the years into celebration of Lennon and the ideals for a better world held so dear -- the Lennon Tribute.

The show features a line-up of veteran singer-songwriters: Marshall Crenshaw, who early in his career played John Lennon in BeatleMania; Steve Forbert, whose new album, Strange Names & New Sensations, has won critical raves; and The Kennedys (Pete and Maura), who remain a favorite on the indie folk scene after more than a decade on the road.

Also appearing in the show is standup performance artist Joe Raiola, who has been touring the country in an updated version of his controversial comic tour de force, Almost Obscene.

All proceeds benefit World Hunger Year, the grassroots organization dedicated to finding solutions to hunger and poverty, founded in 1975 by Bill Ayres and folksinger, Harry Chapin.

The 27th annual Lennon Tribute is on Friday, December 14, at 7:30 p.m., at The Ailey Citigroup Theatre on the West Side.

We All Shine On: Yoko’s Tower of Geothermal Peace Power

It might seem like every time you turn around, Yoko Ono is saying, “Hey, remember that seminal musician I was married to who was brutally murdered?” But her latest project, even though it hovers within the same territory, is giving me a serious case of the warm fuzzies. The Imagine Peace Tower is a beam of light that will shine in Reykjavik, Iceland from October 9th of each year (John Lennon’s birthday) until December 8th (the day he was shot), as well as on New Year’s Eve, at the beginning of spring, and other special occasions. Dependant on the changing atmospheric conditions of Iceland, the brightness of the beam and the glow around it will always be in flux.

Yoko chose Iceland "because it is a very eco-friendly country" which relies on geothermal energy. The peace tower is powered entirely by the Hellisheidi Geothermal Power Plant.

The base of the tower is a wishing well, with “Imagine Peace” engraved on it in 24 languages. Buried in the earth in capsules surrounding the tower will be more than 495,000 wishes for peace that Ono has been collecting at her galleries since 1981 and more recently via her website. Ono wants each capsule to be topped by a tree. "Eventually it will be like a forest," she said.

The tower is based on a concept Ono publicized to her supporters more than 40 years ago. Even in 1965, “LIGHT HOUSE” sounded like it might be non-intrusive on the environment: “A house constructed of light from prisms, which exists in accordance with the changes of the day.” On one of their first meetings, Lennon asked Ono to build him that tower. She laughed it off as an eventuality, not something that was possible at the time.

Now that the man who said “imagine all the people living life in peace” would have been 67, wouldn’t it be nice if this belief was more universally seen as wise rather than young and radical? Bravo, Ono. There’s more Lennon-tailored symbolism to this tower you can read about on ImaginePeace.com, but I’m glad her basic concept is so accessible to reach the maximum amount of people.
